Have you ever played “Six Degrees of Blog Friends?” Maybe you have and you don’t even know it. It is the name I have given to the game we all play when we read a friend’s blog and then click on one of their friend’s blog and before we know it we are reading blogs of complete strangers!
“Six Degrees of Blog Friends” is what I call the phenomenon of what happens when while you are reading a stranger’s blog, you notice that you have a friend in common. Get it???? Yes, it has happened to me on more than one occasion. I was reading a friend of a friend’s blog and found one of my former Bishop’s wife’s blog.
It also happened to me a few weeks ago. I found one of my roommates from my first and only semester at BYU. I was so excited! I immediately left her a comment and sent her an email. Well….
My excitement soon led to major paranoia (on my part AND DEFINITELY on her part!) I received a confirmation that she read my email, but she never responded to it. I checked her blog again to see if she left a comment in response to the comment I left her. Well, not only did she not leave a comment, she deleted the blog post!
I checked her blog a couple more times and there were no new posts. I checked it again today, and now her blog is set to private! I guess she thought I might hop a plane from warm, sunny Florida and start stalking her in cold Idaho. How exciting can life in Idaho actually be, that you need to keep it private?
I told my friend Emily about this and the same type of thing happened to her. She often read the blog of a friend of a friend. One day she finally met the person and told her how much she enjoyed reading her blog. The next time Emily visited the blog, it was set to private! If you have ever met Emily you know she is one of the sweetest people in the world…not a big threat to become a cyber-bully.
I am not against private blogs. Several of my friends have private blogs and I totally respect their choice.
I just think it’s kind of funny in this situation…what did this girl think I was going to do to her??? I love when people give themselves so much importance!!!! (Like I am doing by assuming I am the only reason she set it to private! How conceited of me!) But really!!! RELAX!!! I just wanted to say “hi” to you, Jeri Kay, I didn’t plan on invading what I am sure is a very exciting life in the mountains of Idaho!!!! Stay warm this winter! I know I will!
Ha ha ha! So well said. So interesing what and who we come across in this crazy blogosphere.
That is so weird that she deleted your post and then made her blog private.
I do have a private blog, but that is only to protect my children’s privacy. You would not believe the creeps that check out blogs just to see pictures of people’s toddlers in the bathtub or potty training. Things you and I think are cute and nothing more. Anyways, if someone wants to see my blog and I know who they are (or a friend knows who they are), I will most likely (and have in the past) give them access to my blog.
But, yeah, your experience would definitely make me upset.
ha ha…totally agree with what you said!
