Make a Spooky Terrarium Vignette

Even though my day-to-day creative endeavors revolve around making greeting cards, I love to digress every now and then and create something altogether different.  When the opportunity came my way to participate in a campaign during this Halloween season for Martha Stewart Crafts, I jumped at the chance!

Lately, I have been infatuated with terrariums.  I was over the spooky, full, Halloween moon when I found a terrarium on clearance at Home Goods that looked like a spooky graveyard.  Combine a spooky-looking terrarium with Martha Stewart Crafts decorative arts paints and supplies from Plaid, and here is what you get:  a spooky graveyard Halloween vignette!

Crafty Paper Dresses

I was recently asked to judge a local version of “Project Runway.”  All I needed to do was show up.  I didn’t know anything about the logistics of the competition.  I was pleasantly surprised when I showed up and learned that the participants were going to be working as teams on their challenges.  I was even more thrilled when I learned that they had to make their creations out of newspaper and tape.

That’s all they could use.

The goal was for the girls to make modest outfits.  After they were divided into teams and sent off to start their tasks, they were thrown a curve ball:  they needed to add a modest bathing suit design to their creations.

I was so impressed with the creations!  I wished I could have turned all of the outfits into real dresses right then and there…I would have bought them all!

Unfortunately, I didn’t bring my camera.  Darn!  Here are a couple of shots from an I-phone.  I think you can get a good idea of how fun the event was, and how much can be created with paper.

I like all of the thought that went into this dress.  The skirt, the sleeves, the necklace, and the hair bow…a complete look!

Check out this adorable bathing suit!  My favorite part is the bathing cap.  How cute!

Crushed Ice and Styrofoam Cups

Yesterday I was pouring soda into a Styrofoam cup with lots and lots of crushed ice (the way I like it) and I immediately had a flashback to Jupiter Medical Center.  And then I realized that I need to finally blog about the cancer experience from start to finish.

Even though the last PET scan was clean, NB just this minute had to get out of bed to take pain meds for the neuropathy.  It is a side-effect of the chemo.  He has been off chemo for eight months, but still has side effects.

Tomorrow I will start at the beginning.  February 10, 2011…the day everything changed.

Quilling: An Update

Comments Off on Quilling: An Update

Remember this entry about quilling?  I received a lovely blog comment today from one of our readers, Madalina.  (Isn’t that a beautiful name?)  If you are a fan of quilling or want to learn more, I am going to share Madalina’s response with all of you.

Here is what the lovely Madalina had to say:

Hi there. I don’t know if you already found  your answer but I love quilling and I couldn’t help myself not answering your questions. There are special tools for quilling out there. You can buy them at craftshops or on the Internet. I personally had to improvise since in my country this type of art isn’t known. So I use a needle or a round toothpick if I want the center part to be a little wider. As for the glue. I prefer one that holds well, dries quickly and becomes clear after drying. I don.t know if there are some perfect glues out there. You just have to experience with different kinds until you find THE ONE. hehe. That’s what I did. As for gluing your individual pieces or are your design together, I recommend putting a small amount of glue on a piece of scrap paper and then dipping a flat toothpick in it. Then you can just use the toothpick to spread the glue where you need it. I think these are the basics of quilling. Oh you also need strips of paper. Those you can buy . There are so many choices now you just have to find the colours you need . The most common width of paper to work with is 1/8”. I prefer to cut my own strips. This way I’m choosing the width of the paper depending on the project I want to make. You can also use a trimmer. I’m bad at giving advices but I hope I helped you a bit. Thanks and I have to say I love your site. It inspires me a lot.  I’m planning to make a Paper Cake Treat Boxes and decorate it with quilling.

Thanks again, Madalina!  Send us some photos of your quilling projects.  We want to see them and learn more about you, your quilling, and your country.
