Have you ever discovered something new and then asked yourself, “How in the world did I live this long without this?”  Well, once you add Dazzling Details glitter glue to your projects, you will definitely know what I mean.

Five Hundred Twenty Five Thousand Six Hundred Minutes

That’s how you measure a year.  February 10th will mark the one-year anniversary of Neil’s colon cancer diagnosis.  I’m planning on posting the events of that day soon.  In the meantime, here is a re-cap of our 2011 in case you aren’t on our holiday mailing list.  (and if you’re not, WHY not?!)

This year…

…as the clock struck twelve and 2011 began, Neil looked at me and said he had a feeling that this year was going to be a great year.  Depending on how you look at it, it was actually the best year of our lives.

We experienced…

…joy!  Adrienne graduated high school and is thriving in college.  She is living her dream at Duke University in North Carolina.

We celebrated…

…a birthday!  We spent Erica’s sweet-sixteen in NYC.  Adrienne met us there and it was fun to be reunited as a family.  We also celebrated with some of Erica’s best friends who attend college in the Big Apple.

We endured…

…tough stuff.  Neil’s mom passed away in May.  We are grateful that we were able to travel to Canada in time to say goodbye.  We spent a peaceful week in her home, packing up all of her treasures, and remembering her with family and friends.

We learned…

…a very important lesson.  A person really only has two choices in life:  to live in fear, or to live by faith; the two principles cannot co-exist.  We chose the latter, and that has made all the difference.  As a result of our choice, we were able to experience constant peace during the terror of Neil’s colon cancer diagnosis in February and ensuing treatments and hospitalizations.  Now that the nightmare is over and he is cancer-free, we have an even greater knowledge that God lives and that Jesus is The Christ.  So Neil was right after all…2011 was a great year.  In fact, it definitely has been our best year ever.

Our prayer for all of you this holiday season is that you

replace all of your fear with faith

and always remember that

God lives and that Jesus is The Christ.

With love from The Harrevelds …Neil, Charlene, Adrienne & Erica

American Girl Doll Hula Costume

I’ve been searching through my files and I realized that somehow I forgot to post photos of this American Girl doll hula costume.  Forgive me!

(Actually, I’m sure I posted it, but I can’t seem to find the post.)
The skirt is made from ribbon.  I cut one piece for the waistband and attached Velcro.  I sewed the skirt pieces to the waistband.

I made the flower pieces from scraps that I had in my scrap pile.  If you make one, be sure to use some glittery paper to add bling to the overall look.

Leave it to our PAL Nancy to come up with these deliciously adorable “L.O.V.E.” blocks for Valentine’s Day!  (Poor Nancy…she dropped a very heavy table on her toe yesterday and broke it!  …her toe, not the table…  Please keep her in your thoughts.  She is in so much pain.)

Make a Deluxe Candy Wrapper Box: Template & Tutorial

Comments Off on Make a Deluxe Candy Wrapper Box: Template & Tutorial

I’ve been wanting to make a huge candy wrapper box for a long time!  It has always been a challenge for me to figure out how to make the ends of the boxes do that cute fold-and-pop thing that makes the box looks so cute.  Alas, I decided to just buy a box of Ghirardelli peppermint stick chocolates, take the box apart, and copy it.

You’re in luck, because I made a template of the box for you, too!  Download it HERE.

The box is large enough to fit about a dozen chocolates.  (I’m sure you could hide a diamond ring inside there, too.)  It makes a great Valentine’s Day gift.  You can put a gift card inside, too.  Teachers would love to find one on their desk for Valentine’s Day, don’t you think?

Do you like the cool “Wonderful You” roses embellishment that I added to the box?

This is what you should end up with when you trace the template onto your cardstock:

Here are some tips to help when you assemble the box:
