We’re Safe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No hurricane this time around.

The birds and our family can now live happily ever after (or until the end of hurricane season, whichever comes first.)

Do We Save Ourselves or Do We Save the Birds: That is the Question

Okay, what would you do? I’m trying not to be a “What If?” person anymore, but I can’t help but wonder what to do if…

Tropical Storm Dean heads our way. Should we close the hurricane shutter that houses our baby birds to save ourselves, or leave the shutter open to save the baby birds?

Before you answer, look at the pictures I took this morning. The babies are now 3 days old.

Our Birds Giving Kisses to Their Mom

These birds have been consistently giving birth in our backyard since 2004. Well, I should say I actually accidentally discovered their nest in 2004, when I reached on top of our storage cabinet outside by the pool to wipe off what I thought was a pile of debris. (I suddenly screamed when the pile of debris started moving after I touched it!) There really is no way of telling how long the nest was there.

The cabinet and nest were both destroyed during the first hurricane of the terrible hurricane season that year. We were beyond thrilled when the birds returned and built another nest on our hurricane shutters. (They have since built a vacation nest just around the corner from this nest, but they haven’t had any babies there yet).

The birds are constantly reproducing. As soon as one pair hatches, grows, and flies away, the mom and dad bird re-secure the nest and start all over again.

I will try to follow this new pair on their quick journey of growth. (I actually have a video of them playing with their mom this morning and the mom, I swear, has the biggest smile of pride on her face. Unfortunately, the file is too big and wouldn’t download). In about a week they will be grown and the mom and dad will help them leave the nest and fly.
I love our birds. It is amazing to me that they always return. It is also extremely metaphoric, especially now that Adrienne will be starting high school and Erica will be starting middle school next week. My, how they grow and leave the nest so quickly.

Today’s edition of The Palm Beach Post had an article titled “The 10 Things I Love About NY.” Here are my 10:
10) The smells (pollution, food, subway, Canal Street)
9) The noises (people, traffic, car horns)
8) The people (hustle and bustle, always helpful)
7) The food (peanuts, pizza, anything and everything)
6) The shopping (Canal Street, American Girl Place, random street markets)
5) The tall buildings
4) Flying into LaGuardia and seeing the Statue of Liberty (which is immediately
negated by the sick feeling of NOT seeing the Twin Towers)
3) Times Square
2) The random celebrity sightings (Steven Spielberg still takes the cake)
…and the Number One reason I absolutely LOVE NY more than any other place
I have ever been is because of the incredibly unforgettable memories I make every
time I go…

I Don’t Know If It’s Scary or Cool, But I Know It’ll Make You Dizzy

Have you downloaded Google Earth? It’s cool to fly to your house, but just don’t watch the computer screen if you have motion sickness because you will get dizzy!!!! I was shocked, amazed, bewildered, in awe, and even afraid of “Big Brother” watching us! Here is our house… pool, landscaping, covered patio, and all! (I’ll be REALLY scared when it becomes “Google Earth: X-Ray Version” and the world will be able to see the INSIDE of houses and all my piles of dirty laundry).
