DIY Dorm Room Headboard with Video
Make a DIY dorm room headboard so your baby’s pillows won’t fall off the bed! Last year, we used a huge piece of cardboard to keep Erica’s pillows from falling. However, this year we took a road trip before we moved Erica into college. We rented a huge SUV so that we would be able to go to Home Depot to get supplies to make her a headboard. The final result didn’t turn out anything like I planned it in my head…it turned out better than I imagined! I’m already sad that we will probably have to throw it away at the end of the year. (There isn’t a way to store it. Boo hoo.)
Look at this pathetic bed. I kind of understand why it doesn’t have a headboard. It is dorm room furniture and the bed has all of the necessary holes to make it a bunk bed. It isn’t possible to butt the bed up against the wall because there is a funky pipe and an indent in the wall. The space behind the bed is the perfect place to hide things, but it is also an abyss for pillows in the middle of the night if there isn’t anything on the bed to stop the pillows from falling.
I had originally planned to buy a sheet of plywood and have the people at Home Depot cut it to the correct size. When we got to Home Depot and I saw this sheet of 3′ x 5′ Fiberock Underlayment, I knew right away that it would be perfect! It was the right size and shape and we didn’t need to have it cut. The best part was the price! It was only $7.74!! Look at how perfectly it fits behind the bed!
Even though it wasn’t really necessary, Neil bought screws to reinforce the board. Because dorm room beds can be lofted or bunked (or not!) there are several holes on the bed frame to raise or lower the mattress frame. Neil used the holes to screw the board into place. If you look closely in the picture below, you can see the silver screw on the left side. Perfect, huh?
The best part was decorating the headboard. There are an infinite number of ways to spruce up a plain piece of board! Our original idea was to attach a piece of cork board so Erica could pin some fun pictures to the headboard. However, once we unpacked all of her boxes, we remembered the really cool DIY yarn wall hangings that we made last year and immediately knew they would be perfect!
Before and after:
I made a quick video to explain the process in case you are a visual learner like I am! And I know, I know, when I filmed the video I held the camera in the wrong direction. But I was dropping off my baby at college! I was a little stressed!
