Some Thoughts About Addiction

Surgeon General’s Addiction Report

I recently read the Surgeon General’s addiction report.  Guess what?  Addiction is a bigger health problem than cancer.  Almost twenty-one million people have a substance abuse addiction. That’s not counting the hundreds of thousands of people who are addicted to shopping, gambling, pornography, online gaming, or food. It’s a lot of people, folks.

Yet addiction and addiction treatment are immediately approached under a shroud of confidentiality and anonymity.  There is something inherently wrong with that.

If you see someone choking, grabbing their throat and struggling to inhale, wouldn’t you immediately drop what you were doing and rush to help?  Isn’t that an intrinsic human reaction?

So why do we approach addictions differently than we approach diabetes or blindness or a broken arm?  Addicts are fighting for their next breath, trying with all their might to come up for air. However, we tell the addict that we’ll keep his or her problem confidential, and by so doing, we immediately assign shame.  As a result, we turn a disease into a secret and that is wrong.

Neil and I began working as Church Service Missionaries in our church’s addiction recovery program over two years ago.  We are 100% committed to maintaining the confidentiality and anonymity of the people who attend the meetings ( and that’s the way we will keep it.)  But the Surgeon General’s Addiction Report got me thinking.  Maybe addiction should be approached like the disease it is.  We all have problems.  Can’t we just come together and work together and hug each other and realize that we are all in this together???

Thanksgiving Party Decorations & It’s Okay To Admit You Read My Blog

Thanksgiving Party Decorations

This post is really about Thanksgiving party decorations.  But first, let’s get something out of the way.

It’s okay to tell  me you read my blog.  Really!  It’s okay!

I’m saying this because I kind of chuckle whenever someone “confesses” to me that they read here.  They kind of lean in and whisper to me, as if they are ashamed.

I know how they feel.  I’ve spent lots of hours reading the blogs of people I don’t know.  And people I do know.  I find blogs very interesting.  More so than books.

Yesterday, while we were in the book section of Costco, I admitted that I don’t have time to read books and that I don’t want to make the time.  When I have time to read, I like to read blog essays. And I’m not ashamed to admit it!  I even share blogs I like with other people.

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

If you like reading here, set up a free account on  bloglovin’  (be sure to Follow my blog with Bloglovin) and then download the free app. You can enter the URLs of your favorite blogs and whenever you open the apps, the latest blog entries will show up.  It’s a great way to read blogs without having to go to each blog individually.  You can read the latest entries on your phone or tablet, one by one.

That brings me to the real purpose of this post.

Cornual Pregnancy: Epilogue

Cornual Pregnancy

Advice for Future Pregnancies

The doctor advised us that if we wanted to have another baby, we needed to undergo in vitro fertilization.  Once a woman experiences a cornual pregnancy, the chances are high that she will have a subsequent cornual pregnancy. In vitro avoids this complication because the embryo implants in the proper area of the uterus. This time we didn’t listen to the doctor.  We took our chances.  I had been through enough and I didn’t have the strength to deal with in vitro.

Some Background Info

In simple terms, a cornual pregnancy is NOT an ectopic pregnancy (outside of the uterus) but an interstitial pregnancy where the embryo implants in the upper corner of the uterus. Basically, the embryo implants in an area of the uterus where there is no room for it to grow.  It gets stuck in the wrong place.  One in fifty women with an interstitial pregnancy will die. Women with interstitial pregnancies have a death rate seven times higher than women with ectopic pregnancies.  When people say that their doctors recommended that they abort their babies but they decided not to listen to their doctors and now they have healthy children, I say, “Good for you!  Here’s your medal!”  You aren’t better than me because of your decision.  I would have DIED if I didn’t listen to the doctors.   Continue reading
