First Apartment: Kitchen Before and After

Adrienne loves to experiment with new recipes, so unlike me, her kitchen is very important to her.  It was so easy and fun to decorate, thanks to Target and a lovely place in Durham called the Scrap Exchange.  (You can read more about the Scrap Exchange HERE.)  Whenever we visit Adrienne, the Scrap Exchange is at the top of my list of places to visit.

Aren’t these empty brie containers fabulous?  They were 25 cents each from the Scrap Exchange.  I love the pop of color and dimension they add.  I placed them on top of the kitchen cabinets to create a focal point.  On the other side, I balanced the focal point with a container of yellow flowers that I found at a thrift store for $5.  Since the apartment layout is an open floor plan, the yellow flowers are perfect to brighten the kitchen and add to the yellow theme in the living room.

There is a funky empty space next to the oven and the center cabinet.  I stuck this record album holder that Adrienne wasn’t using anymore in the funky space to store paper grocery bags.

She wasn’t in the market for a microwave cart, but when I found one on clearance for $25 at Target I just had to buy it.  It fits perfectly against the kitchen wall and the extra storage space is always a plus.

The carpet is from Costco.

I have never been a big fan of storing kitchen utensils out in the open, but she really needed extra drawer space in the kitchen.  When I found that fantastic jar on clearance at Crate&Barrel for $6, I had to get it.  It came with a cute lid, too, which we put away in case she wants to repurpose the jar in the future.  The basket is from the Scrap Exchange, and the glass bowl is from Target.

You’ll notice three FREE items in these photos:  a set of dishes, a vacuum, and a little tea pot.  These items were all BRAND NEW!  Back in May when Adrienne moved out of her apartment on campus, she found them in the “donation” pile in the laundry room.  The vacuum alone is $99 at Target.  It works perfectly on hardwood floors.  The red dishes go great with the yellow and grey theme, too.

The plan was set.  Adrienne and I would drive to North Carolina the first week of June while Erica was at Girl’s Camp.  We would decorate her bare-bones apartment during that first week while she started her new job.  I would drop her off at work, run errands, and then after work we would work on decorating together.  We were so excited to put all of our Pinterest pins into action with a beautiful clean slate of hardwood floors and crown molding as our canvas.

Of course we all know what happens when we make plans.  They never work.  We returned from a Disney Cruise early Sunday morning in Port Canaveral.  We left her car there while we were on our family vacation cruise post-graduations to celebrate my parents’ 55th wedding anniversary.  Her car was filled to the brim.  As soon as we arrived at her apartment Sunday evening, we retrieved all of her stored belongings from her friend’s house.  There was barely room to walk on Monday night when we settled down in between boxes to watch Real Housewives of Orange County on her laptop.  As we scrunched together to watch the drama on TV, we began to experience some drama of our own:  Adrienne was getting restless and coughing and kind of moaning and groaning.

We chalked it up to exhaustion and stress:  graduation, long car ride, new job, moving, etc.  The problem was that she began to run a fever, and the fever didn’t go away with the usual remedies.  And that cough!  That dry, unproductive, annoying cough.

By Wednesday she needed to go to urgent care because she had a steady fever and the cough was getting worse.  Here is the most disgusting part, and for those of you who know what a germ-a-phobe I am, you will know why I find this so disgusting:  it turns out that everyone in our family who SPENT TIME IN THE SHIP’S SPA/STEAM ROOM had the exact same symptoms.  To make a long story very short, they all contracted some type of rare respiratory virus in the spa on the Disney Dream.  I’ll leave it at that; you can all make your own conclusions.  Now that nearly a month has passed, I can honestly say that our family could have bought the whole darn cruise ship with what we have spent at doctors, hospitals, and pharmacies.

The reason I tell you all that is not only to warn you not to visit the steam room on the Disney Cruise, but also to help you understand that I lost my decorating partner to her bed that week.  Before we even embarked on our journey, Adrienne made it clear to me that she was glad I would be there to help her, but that I needed to understand that it was her apartment and that she wanted to decorate it her way.  No problem, since she would be using her money to pay for all the stuff.  Unfortunately, her wish did not come true.  Thank goodness for cell phones and phone cameras.  I ended up texting her a ton of photos of things for her approval, and there are fun stories to go along with just about everything I bought/was given.  Take a look:

She didn’t have a color scheme in mind when we started out on the decorating adventure, but I will share with you how it all unfolded into a theme of gunmetal gray and yellow.

It all started with this loveseat and chair combo from a great stored called World Market (link to website on sidebar.)  I found these little goodies for 50% off about 15 minutes before the store closed and I am so glad I did.  Once I found them, everything else in the apartment just fell into place.

While we were unloading these from Adrienne’s car, I noticed her neighbor carrying a bookshelf out of his front door.  I yelled, “Hey are you throwing that away?”  Of course I jumped on his response when he said, “Yea!  You want it?”  Nothing like neighborly love!  He also added that he was throwing away a couch, coffee tables, and a microwave oven.  He was moving to China and was so appreciative to be able to move the stuff just a few feet into Adrienne’s apartment instead of having to haul it all to the far-away dumpster.  We were more than happy to take it all and to get our Pinterest juices flowing.

To all of my fellow germ-a-phobe friends, I well set your minds at ease right now. Before I went any further, I headed straight to Walmart to rent a furniture steamer.  The couch was in great condition, but, well, ya know.  Lo and behold would you believe that I found (without even looking) a personal upholstery cleaner machine on clearance for forty bucks?  Why rent one when you can own one, right?  So two hours after this nifty couch, which, by the way, matched the furniture I just bought (did you notice that) was clean.

The couch had a few minor boo-boos that needed to be covered, but we knew immediately that a few throw pillows and a little blanket would do the trick.  That’s how the yellow came into the picture.  I popped into Crate & Barrel on my 9,000th trip to Target that week and found these great yellow pillow covers on clearance for $4.95 each.  The pillow inserts were $14.95 each, which was a great deal for a great quality pillow.  I found the gray pillows in the patio section of Target for $4.98 each.  In North Carolina, for some reason Target marked down all of their patio stuff 50% the first week of June.  Lucky us!  The throw on the couch’s seat is actually a twin-sized lightweight blanket folded in half…$14.98 on clearance from Target.  Score again!  Total cost of the couch, including the cost of the upholstery cleaner machine:  $130.00.  The fact that it matches the other furniture that I had just purchased:  priceless.

Below are before/after pics of the bookshelf and coffee table. We used spray paint for the coffee table and I used a roller and paint for the bookshelf.  Instead of using coasters, I put placemats down to add an accent to the top of the coffee table and to protect it from things like bowls of cereal, etc.  I think it’s a great idea for parties, too.

Let’s Back Up to Before the Graduations

During the month of April, Neil and I worked as tour guides during for the open house of the new Ft. Lauderdale Temple for our church. It was a great experience to be able to tell visitors about both the physical and spiritual aspects of the building.  The open house lasted a few weeks, and then the Temple was closed to the general public and dedicated before officially being opened to members of our church.

We found out a few days before the temple’s dedication on May 4th that we would be able to attend the dedicatory ceremony inside the temple itself instead of having to watch a live broadcast of the dedication via satellite in our church meeting house.  Fantastic!

Such an event is so rare, sacred, and special that we flew Adrienne home a week before her graduation so that she could attend with us.  She was finished with classes and was just killing time before  her graduation ceremony.  When we made our original plans to drive to North Carolina for the graduation festivities, little did we know that she would be a passenger in the car with us driving to her own graduation.

The weekend of the dedication began with a cultural celebration on Saturday night.  It was so fabulous sitting just a few yards away from Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the First Presidency of our church.  (He is dreamy-handsome.  I have to admit I had a Donny moment when he walked out on stage.  Luckily, the occasion was one of clapping and cheering because when I laid eyes on him, I screamed!)  I mean, look at this man.  Gorgeous inside and out.  But I digress…

The cultural celebration was a way to showcase the different cultures and aspects of our southern Florida heritage, climate, and customs to the visiting church officials.  It was grand.

Nothing could compare to the events of the next morning, however, when we sat together as a family inside the temple to listen to the dedicatory talks and prayers.  We were fortunate enough to be seated in the temple’s chapel.  On his way in and on his way out, President Uchtdorf poked his head in and greeted us and welcomed us to the temple.  It was beyond description.

I am not one to remember specific details about things,  but I do remember how things make me feel.  There are no words to describe the feelings of that day.  I do remember the remark he made about the special role of women in the church.  His words rang loud and clear to me and my girls.  As women in the church we have a voice, we are equal to men, and anything other than that is noise and distraction.  So what if we aren’t involved in certain meetings?  Who needs or wants one more responsibility in this life?

Back to the temple dedication.  It was a fabulous memory made.

Now that the temple has been dedicated, Neil and I have the honor of being ordinance workers inside the temple twice a month.  (It’s a sure sign of empty-nesthood when you are called to be a temple worker.  Just sayin’.)

Graduation: Round Two

Comments Off on Graduation: Round Two

We hurried back from Adrienne’s Mother’s Day college graduation in North Carolina because less than a week later, Erica graduated from high school.  (This wasn’t the original plan.  Adrienne wasn’t supposed to graduate college until 2015.  However, because of THIS, she was able to shave off her last year and graduate early.)

The graduation ceremony was spectacular.  Broadway show spectacular.  Both girls attended an arts high school, so the talent was stellar.  When the vocal teacher sang “Over the Rainbow,” I lost it.  Ugly cry lost it.  I remembered back to when I made her a Dorothy costume when she was three years old.  She also loved, loved, loved to read the original story of The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum when she was little.  She checked it out of the library so often that we ended up just buying her a copy.

The next evening we had a fun family party at a great Italian restaurant, Carmine’s Coal Fired Pizza.  I highly recommend it if you are looking for a great place to host a party of about 30 people.

Miss Erica received two scholarships, in part because of her strong academics, and in part because of her charity, Cosmetics for a Cause.  She hopes to one day grow the charity into an international organization.  You can find out more by visiting the website HERE

Graduation: Round One

Mother’s Day 2014 was extra-special because it was also college graduation day for Adrienne.  It was so bizarre to me that exactly 22 years ago on the very same morning, I discovered I was pregnant with her.  It was a miracle weekend.  In the winter of her senior year of high school, months before she knew what college she would be attending, both my dad and Neil were diagnosed with cancer.  (My dad with lung from melanoma; Neil with colon via a routine colonoscopy.)  These photos speak volumes about the power of prayer.

Yeah, we pretty much all coordinated our outfits to match the school’s colors.  My OCD brain is so thrilled that Barnard College has the same color scheme.  I like when everything matches.  😉

Adrienne accepted a full-time job working for Duke as the Research Director for the Duke Center for History, Policy, and Social Change. I will be sharing before and after apartment photos and furniture DIYs soon.  It was so much fun to help decorate her first apartment!  I think I made 237 trips to Target in 5 days.  A dream job at Duke for her plus a dream job for mom being able to justify trips to Target equals a win/win.
