She wasn’t in the market for a microwave cart, but when I found one on clearance for $25 at Target I just had to buy it. It fits perfectly against the kitchen wall and the extra storage space is always a plus.

The plan was set. Adrienne and I would drive to North Carolina the first week of June while Erica was at Girl’s Camp. We would decorate her bare-bones apartment during that first week while she started her new job. I would drop her off at work, run errands, and then after work we would work on decorating together. We were so excited to put all of our Pinterest pins into action with a beautiful clean slate of hardwood floors and crown molding as our canvas.
Of course we all know what happens when we make plans. They never work. We returned from a Disney Cruise early Sunday morning in Port Canaveral. We left her car there while we were on our family vacation cruise post-graduations to celebrate my parents’ 55th wedding anniversary. Her car was filled to the brim. As soon as we arrived at her apartment Sunday evening, we retrieved all of her stored belongings from her friend’s house. There was barely room to walk on Monday night when we settled down in between boxes to watch Real Housewives of Orange County on her laptop. As we scrunched together to watch the drama on TV, we began to experience some drama of our own: Adrienne was getting restless and coughing and kind of moaning and groaning.
We chalked it up to exhaustion and stress: graduation, long car ride, new job, moving, etc. The problem was that she began to run a fever, and the fever didn’t go away with the usual remedies. And that cough! That dry, unproductive, annoying cough.
By Wednesday she needed to go to urgent care because she had a steady fever and the cough was getting worse. Here is the most disgusting part, and for those of you who know what a germ-a-phobe I am, you will know why I find this so disgusting: it turns out that everyone in our family who SPENT TIME IN THE SHIP’S SPA/STEAM ROOM had the exact same symptoms. To make a long story very short, they all contracted some type of rare respiratory virus in the spa on the Disney Dream. I’ll leave it at that; you can all make your own conclusions. Now that nearly a month has passed, I can honestly say that our family could have bought the whole darn cruise ship with what we have spent at doctors, hospitals, and pharmacies.
The reason I tell you all that is not only to warn you not to visit the steam room on the Disney Cruise, but also to help you understand that I lost my decorating partner to her bed that week. Before we even embarked on our journey, Adrienne made it clear to me that she was glad I would be there to help her, but that I needed to understand that it was her apartment and that she wanted to decorate it her way. No problem, since she would be using her money to pay for all the stuff. Unfortunately, her wish did not come true. Thank goodness for cell phones and phone cameras. I ended up texting her a ton of photos of things for her approval, and there are fun stories to go along with just about everything I bought/was given. Take a look:
During the month of April, Neil and I worked as tour guides during for the open house of the new Ft. Lauderdale Temple for our church. It was a great experience to be able to tell visitors about both the physical and spiritual aspects of the building. The open house lasted a few weeks, and then the Temple was closed to the general public and dedicated before officially being opened to members of our church.
We found out a few days before the temple’s dedication on May 4th that we would be able to attend the dedicatory ceremony inside the temple itself instead of having to watch a live broadcast of the dedication via satellite in our church meeting house. Fantastic!
Such an event is so rare, sacred, and special that we flew Adrienne home a week before her graduation so that she could attend with us. She was finished with classes and was just killing time before her graduation ceremony. When we made our original plans to drive to North Carolina for the graduation festivities, little did we know that she would be a passenger in the car with us driving to her own graduation.
The weekend of the dedication began with a cultural celebration on Saturday night. It was so fabulous sitting just a few yards away from Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the First Presidency of our church. (He is dreamy-handsome. I have to admit I had a Donny moment when he walked out on stage. Luckily, the occasion was one of clapping and cheering because when I laid eyes on him, I screamed!) I mean, look at this man. Gorgeous inside and out. But I digress…

Now that the temple has been dedicated, Neil and I have the honor of being ordinance workers inside the temple twice a month. (It’s a sure sign of empty-nesthood when you are called to be a temple worker. Just sayin’.)
We hurried back from Adrienne’s Mother’s Day college graduation in North Carolina because less than a week later, Erica graduated from high school. (This wasn’t the original plan. Adrienne wasn’t supposed to graduate college until 2015. However, because of THIS, she was able to shave off her last year and graduate early.)
Mother’s Day 2014 was extra-special because it was also college graduation day for Adrienne. It was so bizarre to me that exactly 22 years ago on the very same morning, I discovered I was pregnant with her. It was a miracle weekend. In the winter of her senior year of high school, months before she knew what college she would be attending, both my dad and Neil were diagnosed with cancer. (My dad with lung from melanoma; Neil with colon via a routine colonoscopy.) These photos speak volumes about the power of prayer.
Yeah, we pretty much all coordinated our outfits to match the school’s colors. My OCD brain is so thrilled that Barnard College has the same color scheme. I like when everything matches. 😉

Adrienne accepted a full-time job working for Duke as the Research Director for the Duke Center for History, Policy, and Social Change. I will be sharing before and after apartment photos and furniture DIYs soon. It was so much fun to help decorate her first apartment! I think I made 237 trips to Target in 5 days. A dream job at Duke for her plus a dream job for mom being able to justify trips to Target equals a win/win.
